Julius Aboy, a 22 year-old man was sentenced to death in a Delta State
High Court sitting in Warri yesterday after he was found guilty of
stealing N955,600.Justice Marshal Mukoro, the trial judge of High Court
1, gave the verdict. The convict, Julius Aboy is to die by hanging.
The convict was arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit armed robbery and armed robbery, offences punishable under Sections 6(b) and 1(2)(a) respectively of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act Cap. RII Volume 14, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
Julius Aboy on 4th of March,2011 in Warri, robbed a man, Godwin Gwuene of N955,600 while armed with a gun.Luck however ran out of him and his armed robbery gang when an oncoming vehicle knocked down their motorbike at the scene of the crime, leading to the arrest of the convict and killing of another member of the gang by angry mob.
Julius Aboy gave reasons that he dropped out of school out of poverty and that was the reason he ventured into crime. Justice Mukoro said the excuse of poverty was not tenable as poverty was not a license for criminality
