Readily defending their title, the defending champions University of Port-Harcourt on Saturday emerged winners of the 24th edition of the Nigerian Universities Game.
The Games were hosted by the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife.
The win makes it the fifth consecutive time UNIPORT will emerge champions of the Games, which started in 1966.
UNIPORT had a total of 120 medals: 63
gold, 41 silver, and 16 bronze aheaddd of second-placed University of
Lagos, who amassed 13 gold, nine silver and 15 bronze medals.
Meanwhile, the football final between OAU and the University of Calabar ended 1-0 in favor of the hosts.
The Vice-Chancellor, UNIPORT, Prof.
Joseph Ajienka, said,“For any university to defeat us, it is going to
try and work hard for it. We pray and engage in training as if our
athletes are poor. I am glad with this because it further confirms our
prowess in both sport and academics. This will be the fifth time we will
be winning NUGA consecutively and we have also won West Africa
University Games thrice.”
Commending the athletes for their good
conduct during the Games, the Vice-Chancellor, OAU, Prof. Bamitale
Omole, said the just completed NUGA Games was an avenue for sport
development in the country.
