Armed Robbers invaded some hostels at the "Abuja Campus" ,University of Port Harcourt, dispossessing the students of their belongings.
Mard Media gathered that the incident which took place around 11.30pm last night caused serious apprehension among the students, who ran for cover during the ordeal.
Students of the school, who pleaded anonymity to avoid reprisals, said their possessions including cash, phones, laptops, ipads, etc, were forcibly taken away by the night marauders.
Mostly hit by the activities of the gang was Mandela hostel, where students who went out to read in the night were robbed of their prized possessions.
“Everybody is now living in fear after the attack. They were very many boys that attacked mainly the female hostels. We heard some of the girls were molested by the boys. Why should this nonsense happen in a school environment that should ordinarily be safe,” a source queried.
It was gathered that students who trooped out to protest the robbery when the gang had left last night, were dispersed by security operatives in the university.
Some of the students, mostly females were reportedly injured by the robbers.
A picture sighted by our correspondent showing spilt blood and female wears scattered in one of the female hostels affected.
At Goodluck Jonathan hostel, two sisters were seriously wounded as one was allegedly hit with the butt of a gun in her nose while the other was hit in the eye.
Interestingly, a member of the gang was said to have forgotten his wrist watch in the affected hostel, while another returned a phone taken from one of the victims, when he saw it was a ‘’Nokia
torch’’.
Security at the campus has gone worse since the sacking of the Man ‘O War boys who were hitherto responsible for security, for what the university authorities saw as the excesses of the paramilitary body.
Recall that some unknown persons had four years ago killed the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the institution, Mr. Wali Amadi in the school premises when he went to rescue a professor who was being attacked by robbers at the time.
What!!!! This is just appalling!!!! How can students be denied security, barely a month into resumption...highly inappropriate!! The VC is definitely on the hot seat right now. He should re-evaluate a lotta things in earnest, for the benefit of students, lecturers $ the university at large.
