The Federal Government had on Tuesday given up on its ‘gladiatorial’ contest with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, withdrawing the ultimatum it earlier issued out to the striking lecturers, saying that there was a reasonable compliance on government’s directive.
The government had initially asked the lecturers to return to classes on Monday or face immediate sack.
However, on Tuesday, the government asserted that it was no longer interested in the ultimatum it issued earlier, but was bent at ensuring that the prolonged ASUU strike was brought to an end.
As confirmed by the Senior Special Adviser (SSA) to president Jonathan on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN has confirmed that the sum of two hundred billion Naira earlier agreed with the striking lecturers in their last meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan has been deposited into a Revitalization of Universities Infrastructure Account.
Speaking with Journalists, Okupe who displayed the letter purportedly signed by the CBN Deputy Governor, Mr Tunde Lemo and addressed to the Accountant General of the Federation, disclosed that two hundred billion Naira has been credited into the account as required.
Okupe further affirmed that the federal government was not willing to make further trouble with ASUU, as its major concern was to ensure that the impasse was resolved for the good of the country. He also noted that over 70 per cent of the lecturers complied with the government’s directive, hence no need to stress much on the issue of ultimatum.
He said, “right now, the issue of ultimatum is not a matter for discussion anymore. There has been substantial compliance nationwide. If I say you must return to work on the 9th and 70% of the people that I am talking to have returned to work, that is substantial compliance.”
